Planning & Development Coronavirus (COVID-19) Updates

In light of the emerging COVID-19 crisis, the Dane County Planning & Development office will be CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC effective 4:30pm, Wednesday March 18th. Department staff will continue to answer questions and process zoning applications via phone and email, where possible.

Zoning Permit for a Sign

You will need to obtain a zoning permit prior to the erection, replacement, or reconstruction of a sign.

In order to apply for a zoning permit for a sign, you will need to submit a number of required materials with the completed application form. Please see link below for more information on zoning permit applications for signs. Once a zoning permit has been issued, you may begin work. Dane County Zoning will conduct inspections on the property to verify that the sign is constructed in accordance with the zoning permit. A location survey may be required if any proposed sign is to be located within 10 feet of a required setback. Zoning staff will issue a certificate of compliance if your project meets all applicable ordinance provisions after the post-construction inspection. Your project may also require local permits. Please check with your Town Clerk for any local permit requirements.
